It truly takes a special kind of person to operate a home-based bakery, particularly if you specialize in only one or two products. Baking, though a creative venture can become monotonous if you do not think of ways to add a bit of pep to your everyday routine; so what's a baker to do?

Bakers who have been operating home-based bakeries for several years may want to consider the following ideas for preventing burnout.

-Diversify your everyday routine by becoming involved in face-to-face social networking groups

-Create your own social networking group that allows you to interact once or twice a month with other home-based bakers or home food processors

-Develop a creative work environment (If you must decorate a cake or roll-out tons of cookie dough, turn on music, listen to a book on tape, or listen to an online Webinar.

-Learn to up-sale your services and offer to be a consultant for a wedding planner or caterer. (As a home-based baker you have a lot of experience in creating baked goods that the public wants.) Create a list of the best baked goods for every occasion i.e. Birthdays, Anniversaries, Weddings, Showers, Get Well Gifts and offer those list in the form of a business collaboration to other food-service/event providers.

-Take time out to learn new skills. Perhaps you want to create a website, learn how to work with fondant or write a blog. Give yourself a day, a week or more to enhance your skills. Invest in you.

-Volunteer your services. You might want to bake a "Welcome to Your New Home" cake for a Habitat for Humanity family. Bake pies for the volunteer firemen in your community. Take time to "pay it forward" and do something completely out of your nature.

-Take a serious look at your business plan and decide if it is working for you. Are you going in the direction your originally planned? If not, why not? If so, is there anything you would like to change? Perhaps you want to add a couple new products or play around with new packaging? What about "green" packaging? Consider opening a brick and mortar?

Keep in mind that every small business has its ups and downs and even though baking is a world of fun, there will be times when you might say, "I just can't make another cupcake." During those times, step back and breathe. You must be able to recognize when you need a break and when you are headed down a disastrous path.

There are times when we are all sick and tired of being sick and tire, just remind yourself that this too will pass and go out on a limb, send the city council members a Red Velvet Chocolate cake, even if you didn't vote for a couple of them, just do it! Sometimes the difference between being bored and recovering from a severe case of boredom is just putting the pedal to the metal and going full speed ahead.
